Scene 1
(a house in the middle of the forest)
(Siegmund enters, exhausted)
Siegmund: I don't care whose house this is - I have to rest here. (falls
to the ground)
(Sieglinde enters)
Sieglinde: A stranger, in our house? I'd better ask him what he's doing here. Who
could he be, to just come into our house and lie by the fire like that? Life hasn't been very good to him; he looks
exhausted to death! Has he passed out? Is he sick? Oh, good, he's still breathing, he's just closed his eyes.
Even in the state he's in, though, he still looks so...strong and handsome!
Siegmund: (semi-conscious) Water! Water!
Sieglinde: Hold still - I'll get something for you. (gets him water)
Here you are - here's the water you asked for. It'll make you feel better.
Siegmund: Oh, that's wonderful. The water really helped me; I don't feel as tired
and worn out any more. And looking at you is bringing my strength back to me. I don't believe my eyes! What beautiful
creature has brought me back to life?
Sieglinde: This house and this woman belong to Hunding. You can stay here and rest
until he comes home.
Siegmund: I'm injured, and I don't have any weapons at all. Your husband will have
nothing to fear from me.
Sieglinde: You're hurt!? Show me your wounds!
Siegmund: They're nothing; don't worry about that. I'm OK, I'm...still alive. I
just wish my shield and spear had been as strong as I am - I'd never have had to run from my enemy. But, those
scoundrels broke them, harassed me and chased me till I was exhausted. Then, the thunderstorm did me in. It took
the last ounce of my strength just to make it here. But now, looking at you, I can feel my strength coming back
to me faster than it left. My struggle was like the darkest night, but now the sun is rising on me again.
Sieglinde: Let me offer you a drink; something sweet to help you get your strength
back.
Siegmund: Please, drink it yourself. You don't know what you're getting into with
me. You've given me so much already, but I don't want anything bad to happen to you because of me. I need to leave
now.
Sieglinde: Who could be after you, that you have to leave so soon like this?
Siegmund: Wherever I go, bad luck follows me. Wherever I try to hide, bad luck finds
me. I want to make sure it doesn't find you here with me! I have to go!
Sieglinde: Stay here! You can't possibly bring bad luck with you here - it lives
here already.
Siegmund: My life has had so much sadness, I guess I've gotten used to it. I'll wait
for your husband here.
