Scene 3

(Siegmund and Sieglinde enter)

Siegmund: Let's stop here and rest for a while.

Sieglinde: No, let's go on a little farther.

Siegmund: I can't go on! Please wait on me, just for a minute. You ran away from your "married bliss" so fast, I could hardly keep up with you. Through the forest and fields, over rocks and cliffs, you didn't hear me calling to you, you just kept running without saying anything, without listening to me. Now stop for a while and talk to me. Listen! I'm your husband! Your brother! I want to hear what you have to say! Please!

Sieglinde: Oh, please, just go away! Run from me while you can! I don't want to bring my curse on you after all you've done for me. What did I do to deserve you? I didn't know what love was, but you brought it out of me by giving me yours! You looked into my soul and found things there inside me that I'd never seen. You blessed me by loving me, your arms brought out my strength, your eyes brought out my courage. But I belonged to a man I didn't love, and my disgrace will only bring you down with me. You can't imagine the shame I feel, and I don't want you to ever have to know what it feels like. Please, leave me before you fall victim to my bad luck! I have to leave you, I can never be yours; I'll never see you condemned like I am.

Siegmund: Whatever those terrible things are that you think you can't overcome, I'll make Hunding pay for them with his blood! Let's not run any more; let's wait for him right here, and I'll take your revenge on him. He'll know the taste of my sword as he dies a coward's death!

(The sound of horns in the distance)

Sieglinde: Do you hear that? His horns, calling to us from the forest. He must be coming this way! He must have woken up, called his family and his dogs together, gotten his weapons, and is coming after you! They're going to get their vengeance on you, Siegmund, and it's all my fault for breaking my wedding vows! (completely delirious) Siegmund!! Where are you? I can't see you!! Please come to me! Please look on me one last time! Forgive me for what I've done to you! Oh, his horn is blowing again; it's coming closer! No sword will stop his anger, I know it. Throw your sword away, Siegmund! It won't do you any good! (on the verge of insanity) Where are you? Oh no, there you are, I see you being torn apart by Hunding's dogs!! They're tearing your flesh apart, the flesh I love so much, they don't see how wonderful you really are! Your sword is broken, the tree has fallen, my whole world is shattered! Siegmund! Siegmund!! My brother!!! (falls to the ground, unconscious)

Siegmund: Sieglinde! My sister! My love!
