Scene 5
(Siegmund and Sieglinde on the mountaintop)
Siegmund: (looking at Sieglinde) She's so sound asleep,
as if she didn't have a care in the world. That woman who just left - I wonder if she brought some kind of peace
to Sieglinde. Well, I guess it's OK that she's going to sleep through my fight with Hunding. Gosh, she seems
almost dead, but I know she's not. Her life has been terrible up to now, but now all she can see are her sweet
dreams. Go ahead and sleep, honey, until I've won the battle and brought us both a happy life together forever.
I've got to get ready for Hunding now; he'll get what he's got coming to him. Nothung will see to that.
Sieglinde: (dreaming) I wish father were here! But
- he's gone into the woods with his son, and hasn't come back yet. Mother! Mother! I'm scared! Who are these
people? Why do they want to hurt us? Black smoke! Thick, scary fog! The house is burning all around us! Brother!
Help me! Siegmund! Siegmund! Siegmund! Ohhhh!
(Hunding enters)
Hunding: (tauntingly) "Sadness"! "Pain!"
Stand and face me! My dogs will find you if you try to hide from me!
Siegmund: I've already run past where you were hiding from me. Come out and fight!
Sieglinde: (still dreaming) Hunding! Siegmund! I
wish I could see them!
Hunding: Come on, you wife-stealer! Fricka will have her revenge now!
Siegmund: You have to call on women to fight your battles for you, eh? Well, you
didn't leave me without a weapon, like you thought. Stand and fight like a man, or Fricka won't be able to help
you at all. See? I got this sword at your own house, out of your own tree! It was meant for me, I have it now,
and you're about to get it! (they fight)
Sieglinde: (awaking) Stop! Please, stop! Kill me
first!
Brünnhilde: (appearing) Trust your sword, Siegmund!
Strike him with it!
Wotan: (appearing) Feel my magic spear's power! Shatter
Siegmund's sword!
(Siegmund's sword breaks into pieces; Hunding strikes him and he falls dead to the ground.)
Brünnhilde: (taking Sieglinde with her) Come on!
Ride away with me!
Wotan: (to Hunding) Away with you! Go to Fricka, and
tell her that my spear has given her dignity back to her. Go!! (He waves his hand at Hunding,
who falls to the ground, dead) And as for Brünnhilde - she defied me! When I catch her, I will
give her the worst punishment the world has ever seen!! (exits)
