Scene 1
(On the Valkyrie's rock)

Gerhilde: Hojotoho! Hojotoho! Heiaha! Heiaha! Helmwige, bring your horse over here!

Helmwige: Hojotoho! Hojotoho! Heiaha!

Gerhilde, Waltraute, Schwertleite: Heiaha! Heiaha!

Ortlinde: (to Helmwige) Bring him over here, next to mine. I know your brown stallion likes my gray mare's company!

Waltraute: Who is that man, hanging from your saddle?

Helmwige: Sintolt, the Hegeling.

Schwertleite: Then don't let your horse near Ortlinde's! She's got Wittig the Irming.

Gerhilde: That's right! They always hated each other!

Ortlinde: Heiaha! Look at the horses! They're getting a little rough with each other.

Gerhilde: Those dead guys really did hate each other, if even the horses can feel it!

Helmwige: Easy, boy. Calm down now.

Waltraute: Hoioho! Hoioho! Hey, Siegrune! What took you so long?

Siegrune: I had a lot to do. Is everybody already here?

Schwertleite, Waltraute: Hojotoho! Hojotoho! Heiaha!

Gerhilde: Heiaha!

Grimgerde, Roßwieße: Hojotoho! Hojotoho! Heiaha!

Watraute: It's Grimgerde and Roßweiße!

Gerhilde: They're riding together.

Helmwige, Ortlinde, Siegrune: Hello, you two! Grimgerde! Roßweiße!

Roßweiße, Grimgerde: Hojotoho! Hojotoho! Heiaha! Heiaha!

The Six Other Valkyries: Hojotoho! Hojotoho! Heiaha! Heiaha!

Gerhilde: Take your horses into the forest so they can eat and rest.

Ortlinde: Keep them apart, so the dead men's hatred won't affect them so much.

Helmwige: My poor Gray really took it hard.

Roßweiße, Grimgerde: Hojotoho! Hojotoho!

The Six Other Valkyries: Welcome! Welcome!

Schwertleite: Were you two riding together the whole time?

Grimgerde: No, we were apart for awhile, but we met up again just before we got back.

Roßweiße: If we're all back already, let's not wait any more. Let's get these warriors to Valhalla. Wotan would want them as soon as possible.

Helmwige: Wait! There are only eight of us. Someone's missing.

Gerhilde: Brünnhilde must still be with that poor Wälsung.

Waltraute: We have to wait for her. Father would be pretty mad if we showed up without her.

Siegrune: Hojotoho! Hojotoho! This way! Over here! Brünnhilde's coming at light speed!

The Eight Valkyries: Hojotoho! Hojotoho! Hey, Brünnhilde!

Waltraute: She's riding that poor horse right towards the fir trees!

Grimgerde: Poor Grane! She's really beating him down!

Roßweiße: None of us ever was in that much of a hurry.

Ortlinde: What is that she's got on her saddle?

Helmwige: That's not a warrior.

Siegrune: It's a woman!

Gerhilde: What is she doing?

Schwertleite: She's not greeting us like she should.

Waltraute: Heiaha! Brünnhilde! Don't you hear us?

Ortlinde: Let's at least help her down from her horse.

Helmwige, Gerhilde, Siegrune, Roßweiße: Hojotoho! Hojotoho!

Ortlinde, Waltraute, Grimgerde, Schwertleite: Heiaha!

Waltraute: Grane finally made it! He must be exhausted!

Grimgerde: She's taking that woman down all by herself.

Ortlinde, Waltraute, Grimgerde, Schwertleite: Sister! Sister! What happened to you?

Brünnhilde: I'm in trouble! Help me, please!

The Eight Valkyries: What were you in such a hurry for? Only people who are running away from something ride like that.

Brünnhilde: I've never run away from anything, but I am now. Father is following me; he'll chase me to the ends of the earth!

The Eight Valkyries: Are you crazy? What's wrong with you? Tell us! What kind of trouble could you be in? Father is - chasing you?

Brünnhilde: Go up on top of the rocks over there and look for yourself. See if he's coming closer. Look to the north. Quickly! Can you see him?

Ortlinde: There's a thunderstorm to the north.

Waltraute: Yes. There are huge dark clouds up that way.

The Other Six Valkyries: We see Father riding his horse this way!

Brünnhilde: He's hunting me down! He's absolutely crazy with anger at me! He's coming. He's coming! Oh, sisters, help me! Protect me from him!

Six Valkyries: (to themselves) What is her problem?

Brünnhilde: Listen! I'll tell you as fast as I can. This woman I brought back is Sieglinde, Siegmund's wife…and his sister. Wotan was furious with the Wälsungs, so he told me I was supposed to let Hunding kill Siegmund in battle. But I used my shield to try and protect him. I went against our Father's will! Siegmund was killed anyway, once Wotan showed up, so I brought Sieglinde here to safety. But now, I'm scared of what Father will do to me, and I don't think I'll be very much help to her. You have to help me! Please!!

Six Valkyries: Oh my gosh! What have you done, Brünnhilde? This is terrible! You're telling us that you disobeyed a direct order from Wotan?!

Waltraute: (looking to the North) It's getting darker, I can tell.

Ortlinde: The storm is coming this way.

Roßweiße, Grimgerde, Schwertleite: I can hear Wotan's horse getting closer!

Helmwige, Gerhilde, Siegrune: They're almost here. I'm scared!

Brünnhilde: Sieglinde will be in so much trouble if he finds her here! He intends to kill all the Wälsungs, I just know it! Will one of you give me your fastest horse, so we can run away? Please?!

Siegrune: You want us to help you disobey Father even more?

Brünnhilde: Roßweiße! You're my sister! You have to help me!

Roßweiße: My horse would never run away from anything.

Brünnhilde: Helmwige, listen to me!

Helmwige: I obey my Father.

Brünnhilde: Grimgerde! Gerhilde! Let me use your horse! Schwertleite! Siegrune! Can't you see how scared I am? I've always helped you when you needed it; help me this one time, please! Save me!!

Sieglinde: (waking up) Don't worry so much about me. All I want is to die. Who told you I wanted to be saved back there, anyway? I could have been killed by the same sword that took Siegmund, and I'd be with him right now. But instead, I'm here, still alive, still far away from him! Siegmund! I want to be with you again, even in death! Brünnhilde, you've already been cursed by helping me. It wouldn't be such a bad thing for you to do, to stab me through the heart with your sword! Please, I beg you! Kill me!

Brünnhilde: Listen! You have to live, because of your love for Siegmund! You have to protect the child he gave you. You're carrying the last of the Wälsungs inside you!

Sieglinde: (finally realizing this fact) Oh! Save me, then! Please! All of you! Use your power to protect my child!

Waltraute: That storm is just about here.

Ortlinde: Run away, if you're scared of it!

The Other Six Valkyries: You're in danger, Sieglinde, but you have to get away from here! We don't dare help you any more!

Sieglinde: (to Brünnhilde) Please help me! Save me and my baby!

Brünnhilde: You'll have to go by yourself! Quickly! I'll stay here and take my punishment from Wotan; that'll give you some time to get far away, where you'll be all right.

Sieglinde: Which way should I go?

Brünnhilde: (to her sisters) Have any of you been to the east of here?

Siegrune: There's a big forest to the east, where Fafner took all that gold, remember?

Schwertleite: Yes! He changed himself into a dragon, and he's got the Ring and the treasure hidden with him in a cave there.

Grimgerde: That doesn't sound much safer than here.

Brünnhilde: But the forest would protect her from Wotan, at least. He never goes there.

Waltraute: You'd better decide - he's almost here.

Six Valkyries: Brünnhilde, listen! Don't you hear him coming?

Brünnhilde: (to Sieglinde) Go on, then, toward the east. Now!! No matter what happens, you'll make it. Be brave! Fight through everything that tries to stop you. Hunger, thirst, rocks, thorns - laugh at them all! And always remember what I'm telling you: You carry the greatest, most wonderful hero the world has ever known inside of you. Here are the pieces of his father's broken sword. I took them from the battlefield, after Siegmund was killed. One day, your son will rebuild this sword and carry it proudly. Now, I'll tell you what you have to name him; because he will always know glorious victory, his name will be "Siegfried".

Sieglinde: Oh, this is a miracle! You are a saint among women! I can never thank you enough for what you've done for me - for us. I will guard this child with my life, for Siegmund. I only hope that one day, you'll get the reward you deserve. I'm sorry for the trouble I've caused you all. Goodbye, Brünnhilde.

(Wotan enters as Sieglinde exits and Brünnhilde hides behind the crowd of Valkyries)

Wotan: Hold it right there, Brünnhilde!

Ortlinde, Waltraute: (aside) Sieglinde's away on her horse.

All Eight Valkyries: Poor Brünnhilde! She's about to really get it!

Brünnhilde: Please, sisters, help me! I'm so scared of what he might do to me! Please try to calm him down!

The Eight Valkyries: Come on in; don't let him see you. Be quiet, and he won't know you're in here. Oh boy! Wotan's off his horse, and he's coming this way. I can tell he's mad!
